They’re as beautiful as carefree (without the crowds).

A new getaway, hidden free spirited secret gems just waiting to be explored. Somewhere idyllic and undiscovered shaded with palm trees. Slow cooked delicacies, breezy bars and aesthetically-pleasing but laid-back riads and hotels. A sweet and wild vibe that speaks to the nomadic soul you’ve always known you have. Here are a curated selection of magical places to add to your travel bucket list near the sea. 

When you think of Morocco, your mind will probably fly to magical Marrakech, to sunsets in the Sahara desert or to colorful souks filled with ancient berber rugs. But this dreamy country is blessed with over 2000 km of undiscovered coastline filled with endless sandy beaches and crystalline waters where the vibe is laid back and the waves are sweet for surfers. Here are some epic suggestions on where to go, see and experience. 

ESSAOUIRA

Oh Essaouira. That beautiful bohemian beach paradise where everyone loves to getaway. 

Essaouira is the kind of place to go if you’re looking for a colorful medina, rich culture, warm locals, delicious seafood and endless sand beaches. In fact, it’s entirely possible to wander the beach and pass just a few other souls even during the busy season, even though at the end of the beach you’ll find chilly surfers, live music and unforgettable sunsets, even though the Medina and souks are just 10 minutes away walking. But that’s the magic of this sleepy and little fishing coastal town. 

One of Morocco’s most laid-back destinations, just 3 hours from Marrakech, a world apart is waiting for you. Where locals and travelers share the chaotic streets and souks. What it does have its charm, where rush and hustling does not exist. Maybe it’s the seaside vibe, or maybe it’s the beuatiful cultural mixture from Portuguese, berber, jewish, dutch and French that makes this place chilled and unique. 

SIDI KAOUKI

A rare untouched paradise

If you’re in Essaouira and looking for a little less crowded beach and a lot more nature, then don’t miss Sidi Kaouki. Just 30 minutes away from Essaouira you’ll find a rare untouched paradise, where beaches are wild, winds are high, sand dunes are sweet, surfers are cute and a marabout keeps the place. Horses and Camels are available for a ride if you feel a little adventurous or you can simply relax under the moroccan sun on the loungers at the beach. I highly recommend to come in the morning to enjoy the day and then going for lunch in the cute little rustic cafes next to the marabout. Grilled sardines, homemade french fries and fresh seafood will be just perfect before enjoying a little siesta by the sea. 

TAGHAZOUT

If you’re looking for sea therapy this place is for you. 

A quiet fishing village in southwestern Morocco known for its surfing its an emerging sweet paradise for yogis, digital nomads, hipsters, artists and of course locals and foreign surfers. I always scape there when I when I really need to get away from it all. It’s tiny, with a very chilled and nice vibe and clearly a lot more relaxed than the rest of Morocco. 

Although Taghazout is becoming popular it still has the air and freedom of a newly discovered land. The village has kept its typical and untouched appearance with narrow alleys, whitewhased walls and vibrant colors from the cute cafes and fresh fruit markets.  

This area has a reputation for being one of the best surf spots in Africa. During the summer, the golden sand and dunes from Taghazout beach are a wonderful place to relax, swim and enjoy the moroccan summer but from Autumn to Spring it’s a surfer’s paradise. This little village is a must if surfing is your thing. You can rent your equipment there or attend camps with other surfers from beginners to experienced surfers. 

If surf is not your thing then you can start your day with Yoga in a rooftop room overlooking the ocean or on the terrace outside, a fresh home made moroccan breakfast and a well-deserved massage. Then please go and wander the streets of this little quite and raw paradise, walk along the beach to see how Fishermans come back from the sea with their boats bustling, buy fresh fish, sip mint tea overlooking the camels watching the surfers at the beach or just enjoy how life simply unfolds in this hidden paradise. 

Cuando piensas en Marruecos tu mente muy probablemente viajará hasta Marrakech, a un atardecer en el desierto del Sahara o a los mercados repletos de alfombras antiguas bereber. Pero también me encantaría que descubrieses los más de 2000 km de costa que atesora Marruecos. Playas salvajes de arena fina todavía por explorar, aguas cristalinas y pueblecitos pesqueros donde el ambiente es libre, bohemio y relajado. Un paraíso para los surferos y amantes del mar en su estado más puro. 

Si sientes que este año necesitas sentir el mar, abrazar tu lado más bohemio, volver a la naturaleza, pasear por playas infinitas y disfrutar de manjares sencillos cocinados a fuego lento estos destinos bohemios junto al mar son para ti. Son tan bellos como relajados y muy alejados de las multitudes.

ESSAOUIRA

Oh Essaouira. Ese destino bohemio de playa en Marruecos donde todos hemos buscado refugio alguna vez. 

Essaouira es ese lugar donde perderse si amas las medinas caóticas y de color, el arte callejero y de espíritu libre, la sardinas y el pescado fresco a la brasa, los desayunos frente al mar y playas infinitas donde podrás pasear casi en solitario. A menos que llegues hasta el final de la playa donde encontrarás chiringuitos de ambiente relajado, música en directo, surferos y dunas sobre las que contemplar el atardecer frente al océano. 

Uno de los destinos de ambiente más relajado en Marruecos, a tan solo 3 horas de Marrakech, un mundo aparte te está esperando. Donde viajeros y locales se mezclan en los mercados y comparten terraza y conversación en los cafés de la medina. Donde la prisa y el reloj no existen. Quizás sea la influencia del mar o la bonita mezcla de culturas de esta tierra por donde han pasado portugueses, bereber, judios, alemanes y franceses lo que la hace ecléctica y única. 

SIDI KAOUKI

Un paraíso por descubrir

Si estás en Essoauira y te apetece escapar a una playa más desértica y más naturaleza, entonces no puedes perderte Sidi Kaouki. A tan solo 30 minutos de Essaouira, encontrarás un paraíso todavía por descubrir, donde las playas son salvajes, los vientos soplan fuerte, las dunas dibujan el paisaje y un marabout guarda el lugar. Si te apetece un poco de aventura puedes dar un paseo en camello o caballo a la orilla del mar o si te apetece más tomar el sol puedes alquilar una tumbona en la playa. Te recomiendo llegar por la mañana para disfrutar del lugar, dar un paseo, un baño en el mar y después disfrutar de una comida sencilla pero deliciosa en uno de los cafés junto al marabout. Sardinas a la brasa, patatas fritas caseras y doradas recién pescadas serán la antesala perfecta de una siesta junto al mar. 

TAGHAZOUT

Si necesitas terapia de mar este lugar es para ti. 

Un pueblecito pesquero al suroeste de Marruecos conocido por ser lugar de encuentro para surferos se ha convertido en los últimos años en refugio para yogis, nómadas digitales, hipsters, artistas, bohemios y por su puesto surferos locales y extranjeros que viajan hasta aquí para disfrutar de sus olas. 

Aunque Taghazout en los últimos años haya sido descubierto por más viajeros todavía conserva ese aire despreocupado y de libertad de las tierras que todavía conservan su esencia y sus raíces. El pueblo aún con calles de arena y sin asfaltar, ha conservado su arquitectura rústica con calles estrechas y paredes blancas desgastadas. 

Surfistas de todo el mundo viajan hasta Taghazout para disfrutar de sus olas ya que es reconocida como uno de los mejores puntos de África para practicar surf. Durante el verano puedes disfrutar de las playas doradas de arena y dunas para relajarte, darte un baño en el océano y tomar el sol. Pero desde el Otoño hasta la Primavera es paraíso para los surferos. Puedes alquilar tu equipo en el pueblo o bien apuntarte a uno de los camps para aprender a disfrutar de las olas. 

Si el surf no es para ti, puedes comenzar el día con una clase de Yoga desde la azotea con vistas al océano, un desayuno casero típico marroquí y un masaje con aceites esenciales bien merecido. Después, por favor da un paseo y piérdete por las callejuelas del pueblo, saborea la fruta fresca y de temporada de los mercados, date un capricho en las tienditas del pueblo, baja hasta la playa para ver como los pescadores vuelven del mar con las barcas repletas de pescado, compra pescado fresco para la cena, siéntate en uno de los cafés frente al mar para contemplar como dromedarios y surfistas se mezclan en la playa o simplemente contempla la vida pasar ante tus ojos, a otro ritmo, de otra manera.
