Essaouira is the place I always go back to breathe again, a lush getaway that will charm you with their rustic and laid-back vibe. 

Dreaming of a moroccan getaway with bight colors, exotic local life and a free-spirited vibe? Look no further than Essaouira, a dreamy bohemian scape. More chic than shabby, this coastal hideaway offer blissed-out barefoot luxury for haute hippies who are ready for sunshine. 

Paradise found. Within the white and blue washed walls of Essaouira’s Medina, you’ll discover a different way to live and experience Morocco. A place to get lost in the souks, to enjoy delicious fresh seafood, for lazy afternoons by the sea and sweet mint tea and cocktails overlooking the ocean at sunset. After some days exploring the south of Morocco, Sahara desert or bustling Marrakech, the peace that is distilled from the pores of this little coastal town is as hypnotic as calming. 

Here are my favorite and top things to do and see in Essaouira, plus some insider tips about the best places to stay and eat during your stay. 

EXPLORE THE OLD MEDINA AND SOUK

Essaouira’s Medina is well known for her soul and relaxed vibe. Enjoy your home made breakfast in your Riad and then simply get lost on its blue small alleys full of colorful berber rugs and pompom blankets, million baskets made from natural fibers, unique ceramics, pottery made in Tamegroute and all the bohemian home decor of your dreams shaded by the whitewashed walls of the Medina. 

Essaouira is a nice and relaxed place to souk and shop, especially if you don’t enjoy the bargain game. Sellers are much more relaxed than in Marrakech and prices are usually lower.  

You won’t need a plan to orient yourself and getting lost will always show you new ways and hidden gems but just as a small tip, there’re two main streets. Avenue Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah where you could find most of the home decoration and handicrafts and Avenue Mohamed Zerktouni where the local souk is and it’s always full of life and color. 

THE FISH MARKET

Salty ocean smell, fishermen with chapped hands and wooden tables overflowing fresh fish. Essaouira has been historically been a little charming fishing villa and it remains exactly the same. Time seams to have stopped and the same ancient rituals are followed generation after generation. 

In the early hours you could see fishermen just returning form the ocean with the fruits from the ocean or you can simply go before lunch time to choose your favorite fresh fish to cook afterwards. It’s also great for a little aperitif made of oysters and crabs. 

Even if you’re not in the mood to buy, the fish market is a lovely place to breathe the soul of this little fishing villa and also a dream for photography lovers. To clarify, in Essaouira you can visit two traditional fish markets. My very favorite and the one with soul it’s by the harbour but there’s another in the souk where you can buy your fresh fish and take it to the little restaurants just behind who will grill it for you for some little money. 

THE BEACH AND DUNES

After a morning well spent in the souks there’s no better place to relax and unwind than wandering the endless beach of Essaouira. Take you shoes off and walk along the sea from the Medina until the dunes where you could enjoy a camel or an unforgettable horse ride along the seashore. Afterwards, sit back and enjoy the bohemian atmosphere of Essaouira in the clubs and beach bars next to the dunes. Local happy hippies, travelers, tanned surfers, bohemians and old fishermen will be part of the scene. 

If you love windurfing then Essaouira will be your secret paradise, surfers from all over the world come to enjoy the winds that Essaouira always has. Renting your equipment or booking a class is quite affordable with some of the companies in town. 

DAY TRIP TO SIDI KAOUKI

Paradise found. Less than 30 minutes away from Essaouira an untouched savage paradise is waiting for you. Fresh and cheap seafood served at the edge of the beach, never ending soft sand beach, sweet weaves for pro surfers and beginners and charming locals riding wild their horses by the seashore for an extra feeling of freedom and nature. Looking for the perfect plan? Rent a sun bed for the day, take a dip in the ocean, enjoy fresh grilled fish and an unforgettable camel ride at sunset by the seaside. 

WHERE TO EAT IN ESSAOUIRA

MANDALA CAFE

Delicious fresh pressed juices, sweet coffee, healthy meals and an excellent brunch with an exquisite presentation and aesthetics can all be had in this delightful cafe located in a wonderfully street after the local souk. 

THE BLUE CAFE IN THE BIG SQUARE

A small family run cafe with just some tables and the most amazing French crepes you’ll ever taste. A delicious selection of sweet and salty crepes fresh made just in the moment you order them. I love this little gem and it’s always the first thing I do when I arrive in Essaouira. I order a simple and delicious chocolate crepe or a lemon and sugar one and take a chair on the terrace to immerse myself in the vibe and atmosphere of Essaouira. 

MEGALOFT

A must for design lovers and passionates of color with a chic and modern atmosphere. The place where fancy locals and travelers meet. Super cool terrace and hidden corners to relax, enjoy a fresh juice or their French-moroccan cuisine. If you have been tanginess for a while this is the place to treat yourself with a western delight. 

STREET FOOD

Essaouira is the place for street food and enjoy a salty or sweet treat while you walk and wander the souks and the Medina. Small family restaurants or tiny cafes opened to the street with one or two tables and beautiful walls covered with old zellige are a delicious option and a experience too. Meals are simple and delicious. There are only 2-3 specialities to choose, order one of each and get ready for one of the best and most authentic moroccan food you will ever try. I love these gems so much, just wander the souks and when you feel that something is smelling good, take a chair and let your senses go.

Un paraíso todavía por descubrir. Tras los muros blancos y azules desgastados de su medina, experimentarás una manera muy auténtica de disfrutar de Marruecos. Un pueblecito azul y pesquero en el que perderse en su mercado, saborear el marisco y el pescado fresco, donde el lujo son unas sardinas a la brasa con pan recién hecho, las tardes de sol y atardeceres contemplados té en mano. Después de unos días en Marrakech o quizás viajando desde el desierto del Sahara, la calma y paz que destila este pueblecito es tan calmante como hipnótica.

Aquí te comparto la lista de cosas que hacer y ver en Essaouira además de algunos consejos que solo un local puede darte sobre donde dormir o donde comer en Essaouira. 

DISFRUTA DE LA MEDINA Y LOS ZOCOS

La medina de Essaouira es conocida por su atmósfera bohemia y relajada. Disfruta de un desayuno tradicional en tu Riad y después sal a explorar la medina y los mercados. Piérdete en sus callejuelas azules llenas de alfombras bereber, mantas de lana de pompom, cestas de palma y fibras naturales, cerámica terracota y toda la decoración bohemia con la que puedas soñar. 

Essaouira es un lugar más relajado que Marrakech para comprar, especialmente si no disfrutas del arte del regateo. Los artesanos son más tranquilos y los precios un poquito más bajos. 

No necesitas un plano para orientarte en la medina y perderte siempre te descubrirá nuevos caminos y oasis secretos, pero te vendrá bien saber que existen dos calles principales. La Avenida Sido Mohamed Ben Abdellah donde encontrarás la mayoría de artesanía y decoración y Avenida Mohamed Zerktouni donde está el mercado y zoco local y siempre rebosa de vida y color.

EL MERCADO DE PESCADO

Olor a sal del oceano, redes de pescar, pescadores de manos agrietadas y tablas de madera rebosantes de pescado fresco recién salido del mar. El carácter de pueblito pesquero de Essaouira sigue intacto, el tiempo parece no pasar por aquí y los mismos rituales se repiten generación tras generación. 

Durante las primeras horas podrás ver los barcos pesqueros llegar de su día de pesca rebosantes de pescado fresco o puedes ir antes de la hora de lo comida para elegir qué pescado quieres llevarte a casa para cocinar y también tomar un aperitivo de ostras y cangrejos de mar en los puestos  del puerto al lado de los barcos. 

Aunque no te apetezca comprar, acércate al mercado es el lugar ideal para respirar y comprender el alma de esta medina y también un sueño para los amante de la fotografía. Además del mercado de pescado junto al puerto, puedes ir al mercado de pescado en el zoco local. Quizás no tenga tanto carácter pero puedes elegir el pescado y comerlo a la brasa en uno de los puestos al lado del mercado por unas pocas monedas.

EL MAR Y LA PLAYA

Después de una mañana en los zocos no hay mejor lugar para relajarse y pasear que las playas infinitas de Essaouira. Descalzate y camina junto al mar desde el puerto hasta las dunas donde podrás disfrutar de un paseo en caballo o en camello a la orilla del mar. Después, siéntate a disfrutar del ambiente bohemio de Essaouira en los clubs y chiringuitos al lado de las dunas. Mezclate entre hippies locales, viajeros, surferos bohemios y pescadores. 

Si amas el windsurf, Essaouira será tu refugio y paraíso. Surfers de todo el mundo viajan hasta Essaouira para disfrutar del viento que soplan durante todo el año. Puedes alquilar tu equipo o reservar clases a precios muy apetecibles para disfrutar del mar. 

ESCAPADA DE DÍA A SIDI KAOUKI

Un oasis relajado para los amantes de las playas de arena infinitas. A menos de 30 minutos de Essaouira kilómetros de playa salvaje te están esperando. Pescado y marisco fresco a la brasa, olas para surferos experimentados y también para los principiantes, ambiente bohemio y surfero relajado y locales montando descalzos sus caballos a la orilla de la playa. El plan perfecto? Siempre que viajo hasta Sidi Kaouki dejo los zapatos en el coche, alquilo una tumbona a la orilla del mar, ma baño en el océano, doy un paseo largo a la orilla del mar, reservo una mesa muy cerca del mar y pedimos sardinas a la brasa con patatas fritas, una siesta debajo de la sombrilla y un paseo al atardecer en caballo para volver a casa con el alma llena.
